How to make Falafel Burgers: Healthy Burgers

Wondering what to cook for dinner? Here is a simple and quick recipe that will not only fill tummies but it is also a great activity to be done with kids. I did this together with my 'little sister' and she had fun. 

Our recipe for today is FALAFEL BURGERS:


Falafel burgers <according to wikipedia> is a traditional Arab food, usually served with pita. It is served with sauces/salsa and is used as a substitute for meat. 

Ingredients:
800 grams of canned chickpeas
1 small onion
1 lemon
2 tsp of coriander
2 tsp of cumin powder
6 tbs of plain flour
tomato salsa
cooking oil
basil for garnish
salt and pepper

Tools: 
Food Processor
Pan

Total Cost = PHP 350

Our Ingredients


Chop the onion and juice the lemon.
Step 1: Juice the lemon and grate some lemon rind.

Step 2: Chop the onion into small pieces so that they can be eaten without being a bother. It has to be small enough for it to mix well with the Chickpea batter.

Since we do not have a food processor, ended up using a blender.



Step 3: Put the chickpeas, chopped onions, lemon juice and rind, cumin powder, and coriander into the "processor". Then 'process' until the mixture turned into a paste.


Since we used a blender, some of the chickpeas were not properly crushed because it tends to stick on the blade. 


Step 4: Mash and season with salt/pepper. So we ended up putting it out and mashing it with a fork, to ensure that everything is mixed well. Season with salt and pepper. 


Step 5: Mold the paste into patties and let it sit on a dry surface with flour.


Use up all paste. 


Step 6: Heat the oil on the frying pan and wait until the oil gets hot. Then place the molded patties into the pan and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. 

Make sure to refill the pan with oil and not let it dry out. Fry all the patties and it is ready to be served.


Step 7: Place on a serving plate to be placed on a dining table or an individual plate.

Step 8: Garnish with basil leaves or serve with tomato salsa.

Voila! There you go. With just 800 grams of chickpeas, you can make up to 12 mini patties to be shared to all. It just took 30 mins <prep and cook> and about PHP 350 to make. Why not try it out! It will be fun!
