Wine and Food Pairing Notes

In relation to my initial post on Planet Grapes, here are some more notes specific to what wine type is best served with what food. Hope this helps you in your next social event.

Types of Wine

  1. Sauvignon Blanc
    • Aromatic
    • Light to medium body
  2. Chardonnay
    • Most common white grape
    • Neutral - flavors may vary
  3. Pinot Noir
    • Lightest red, fruits with thin skin
    • Light tannin
    • Floral aroma
  4. Merlot
    • Heavy fruits
  5. Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Blackcurrant
    • Darkest, highest level of tannin
    • Floral aroma 
Flavors and Wine (Food Pairing)
  1. Sour - pair with wines of similar level of acidity (Sauvignon Blanc)
  2. Sweet - wine has to be sweeter than the food (Dessert wines)
  3. Salty - pair with wine of strong tannin, red wine
  4. Spicy - wine with low alcohol content, sweet wine (Merlot), fruity or ripe
  5. Bitter - pair with sweet wine
Other flavors:
  1. Creamy - sauvignon blanc
  2. Cheese - cabernet sauvignon
  3. Goat Cheese - sauvignon blanc
